Description:

Though rarely in the headlines, Canada is America's most important bilateral relationship and our largest trading partner.  Our two economies are heavily intertwined. The October 19 election ended decisively the ten year domination of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservative party.  The Liberal Party, headed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, has promised a new course for Canada which is bound to have implications for the U.S., given the very close ties between the two nations.

Laura Dawson is Director of the Canada Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington. She is a speaker and writer on U.S. - Canada, North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and international trade issues and was named in 2014 as one of Canada's top 100 foreign policy influencers.
